February 2, 2017
As many in our
community know, our Police K9 Officer Lando tragically passed
away during training this last November. Today the Police Department
is pleased to announce that we are seeking to obtain a new Police
K9 through TOPS Kennel, and our K9 handler Officer Bill Bogdala
has agreed to undertake the training and responsibilities of
continued K9 duty for our community.
The new K9 has
been selected and is currently undergoing initial training with
TOPS trainers. On April 17, 2017 the dog and handler will pair-up
for 10 weeks of intense training as a team. In June 2017 this
training will be completed, and the dog and handler will test
for state certification. Following certification the new K9 Officer
will begin his tour of duty with the department.
to obtaining this new German Shepherd, the Police Department
will conduct a fundraising effort to cover the $12,600 cost.
This amount covers the cost of the dog, the pre-training, the
10-weeks of team training, and one year of recurring monthly
training. We do not have these funds budgeted so must turn to
the community to help make this happen.
We invite community
residents, businesses and organizations to join in this fundraising
effort with a donation toward the K9 program. Donations can be
made below using a credit card, with or without a Paypal account.
For those wishing to donate by check, please make payable to
"Village of Winthrop Harbor" and indicate "K9
Donation" on the memo line. Checks may be mailed to Village
of Winthrop Harbor, 830 Sheridan Road, Winthrop Harbor, IL 60096,
or may be dropped off in person at the same address. All amounts,
large and small, will be very much appreciated.
Thank you for

Here's an update
as of this morning...
- We need to raise
$12,600 in total...
- We were granted
$3,000 from a charitable foundation that supports police K9's

- We are now down
to $7,493 left to raise...
No here's some
EXCITING news... a member of our community, who wishes to remain
anonymous, has stepped forward with an offer of a dollar-for-dollar
match on every donation made between 12:01 a.m. on February 6th
through 11:59 p.m. on February 14th, up to a maximum of the remaining
amount needed to reach the goal. This means that we only need
to raise another $3,746, and with this donor's match we'll have
achieved the goal!
If you'd like
to contribute, and have your donation doubled by this generous
donor, click the link below any time during that time-frame!
